I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…Sundays are for baking. I don’t mean cookies, although I sometimes do have orders I need to work on on Sundays, but Sundays are usually the days when I get to recipe test or try something new on my list of things to bake. Today was no different. I’ve been craving cobbler for a few weeks now. Specifically, blueberry cobbler. I keep thinking about the first time I ever had cobbler…it was summertime, and my Grandma had made a blueberry cobbler, and I thought it was the best thing I had ever tasted. I can remember sitting at her kitchen table eating it. I think blueberry picking must have brought the memory back up, and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. And speaking of my Grandma, last week she gave me a pint of blueberries (I was happy to see them since we had used all of our handpicked ones up in the pie) and she brought over some nectarines, which I wasn’t sure what to do with other than eat straight-up, and I was afraid we wouldn’t get to them all before they got too ripe. A little imagining and a little Googling later, I came upon this recipe for Nectarine Cobbler with Blueberry Muffin Crust. How serendipitous. I got to work.
As a rule when trying a new recipe, I make it exactly as written. I may have a few tweaks in mind even before I start, but I figure if I go muddling with a recipe I’ve never made before, I have no idea how it would compare with how it was supposed to taste in the first place, so I reserve all judgment until I’ve at least made it once first. For example, after reading the recipe, I felt like the 3/4 cup of sugar sounded like a lot to be adding to the nectarines and I almost went with only adding 1/2 cup, but I know that most cobbler topping isn’t very sweet at all (which is actually one of the things I love about cobbler), so I stuck with my rule and added the amount of sugar called for. It actually turned out to be alright in the end, although I probably would reduce the sugar next time.
So, the million dollar question…would I make this again? Um, no. From the title and recipe rating (it had five stars when I first read it, and now has dropped to only two) I had high hopes for this cobbler, particularly the blueberry muffin crust. Disappointingly, there was really nothing special or spectacular about the crust at all, and actually it was a bit too bready for my taste. Which was strange to me, considering they titled the recipe for the crust as “Blueberry Muffin Batter” and there is no way that crust would have made good stand-alone blueberry muffins. But then again, I do tend to be picky about muffins. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t inedible or anything like that…I mean, pretty much anything with fresh fruit in it can’t be that bad, but I’ll be looking for another winning recipe to satisfy my cobbler craving. Anyone happen to have one to share? :)
